Phitsanulok – Thailand

The city of Phitsanulok is the capital of Phitsanulok Province which stretches to the Laotian border in the west. It strikes me as a commercial/industrial kind of place with a University vibe which is pretty cool when it comes to food. We only stayed for one night but we struck gold when we got lost and found the food markets at the western end of Pra Ong Dam Road.

Although the skies were threatening, we parked the car and wandered. First stop was a groovy little kebab stand called Mr Baaloo. Succulent meat (three options) wrapped in little soft little wraps with coleslaw-type salad, they were just what we needed to start the night. We sat on stools, devoured our kebabs and chatted with the young owners while customers came and went. We wandered on through the markets in search of a second course and came across a traditional noodle soup stall. Through our minimal Thai language skills we managed to order a delicious concoction which was delivered to our little plastic table in minutes. And all of a sudden, we were stuffed… just enough room to pick up some coconut custard crepes and donuts for dessert.

Wide roads, big intersections, a number of universities – for us, that’s Phitsanulok. That’s not a negative thing. As a road trip stopover it’s perfectly nice but it’s not somewhere I would go as an end destination. Being an important historical town, Thai people may see that differently.
