Not to worry, the lovely young lady who greeted us suggested we take a table on the verandah of the bar and we could nibble from the bar menu. The city of Phitsanulok is the capital of Phitsanulok Province which stretches to the Laotian border in the west. It strikes me as a commercial/industrial kind of place with a University vibe which is pretty cool when it comes to food. We only stayed for one night but we struck gold when we got lost and found the food markets at the western end of Pra Ong Dam Road.

We found Taman difficult to find but that’s because the signage is in Thai and I’m certainly not complaining about that. If you’re arriving by car, turn into the driveway on the south side right next to the LPG station. Located about 30 minutes out of town, it’s obviously not a wise choice without transport but it does seem to be aimed more at Thai visitors (there is a university across the road).

It’s fun, funky and fast paced but even better than that, the food is fantastic. We stopped in for a light dinner so we steered clear of the many share plates on offer and opted to share the scallop ceviche with dumpling chips. The ceviche was fresh and tangy and the dumpling chips were a creative alternative to corn chips or tortillas.

Over the past 30 years, we’ve stayed at many apartments in Bangkok but I’m so glad we found Baan K. Everything is positive – parking is easy, the welcome is warm, staff are friendly and helpful, very service oriented. Rooms are well appointed, fresh, clean, spacious and nicely decorated with areas for working and relaxing (we stayed in a suite).

When you start to tire of resort food, look for 3 Pinong in the strip behind the Novotel Hotel. It’s a nicely decorated space, clean and comfortable with lots of fans. Service is friendly and staff have terrific English skills so if you’re a little nervous about stepping out of the resort, don’t be. The menu has a decent offering of Western dishes but we went for Thai and weren’t disappointed.

Phetchaburi is the northern most province before you hit the outskirts of Bangkok and the influence of a major international airport can quickly be seen in the surroundings. Being only 2-3 hours from Bangkok, local tourism is also big in this area so if you’re only staying for a short time, avoiding weekends will mean less congestion and potentially a saving of money.
