Life’s a Beach – Quy Nhon, Vietnam

We escaped the busyness of Hoi An to explore Quy Nhon but rather than stay in the city, we wanted a beach escape to spend our down time. Life’s A Beach was the perfect choice.

It’s a small hotel/resort set on a gorgeous beach in the delightful fishing village of Bai Xep (not the backpackers, that’s a few km further south). The people of the tiny village are welcoming and seemed genuinely happy to have us invading their space. There are a few other resorts on this stretch (mostly accessed from the main road not the village) and as with the rest of Vietnam, pollution is a problem here but nowhere near as bad as many I’ve seen. It was definitely not enough to deter me and I’m fussy about my swimming spots! Full marks to the staff at LAB who are doing their best to minimise single use plastics – they even offer a small reward to those who collect from the ocean and the beach.

As we were only staying four nights, we suggested that our sheets and towels not be changed for the duration (a personal choice) but on the one occasion that I did require an extra, it arrived within minutes. Nothing was too much trouble.

On the property, there are number of different rooms to choose from but being three adults travelling together, we opted for the family bungalow with one queen and four bunks – all comfortable with soft pillows. The bungalow was clean, air conditioned (and it works well!), great hot water and a terrific deck to relax and watch the world go by. Our bungalow certainly met all our needs. Situated right on the beach, the view was amazing and it was wonderful to wake up to the sound of the ocean and the people of the fishing village beginning their day. If you’re hanging around all day (which is very easy to do!) and prefer to mix it up a bit, there are many peaceful sitting areas around the garden to choose from.

The bar and restaurant is open all day from breakfast right through to last drinks. The space is laid back and relaxing but service is brisk and friendly. Food is delicious and reasonably priced, particularly considering the large serves. Craft beer is available but they also have local stuff to try. Drinks are always cold! Pub trivia was a heap of fun!

We hired a semi-automatic motorbike for the duration of the stay and were pleasantly surprised to find that they were well maintained and in good working order.

And the staff… they’re all gorgeous. Big smiles, positive attitudes and super helpful. Every one of them tried their best to ensure our stay was as pleasant as possible.

One other thing: an added bonus for us was the huge filtered water bottle (Vietnamese style) which was supplied (they don’t cost much I just don’t know why more properties don’t do this!).
