Canvas Restaurant – Bangkok, Thailand
Polished but comfortable with a clever menu and professional yet friendly service – that was my impression of Canvas. We sat at the bar to take advantage of the ‘entertainment’ of the working kitchen and while there were no Gordon Ramsay style fireworks, it was interesting to watch the team operating so seamlessly. In fact, all of the staff were wonderful – welcoming, knowledgeable and helpful and they seemed genuinely happy to be there. Food was scrumptious. We chose a number of share dishes – pumpkin with chilli, palm sugar and sunflower seeds, wagyu with pomelo, squid with passionfruit and coriander sauce, and catfish with tamarind. All were lovely but the catfish was the standout on this occasion. Serving sizes were decent so we certainly didn’t need desert but we found room for a little ice cream and I’m glad we did. It was an unusual combination (wild plum and peanut butter I think) and totally amazing! The beverage menu provided a good number of options and the pinot noir we chose was delightful. Value for money is on a par with other modern bistro style restaurants in Bangkok and I will certainly look them up next time I’m in town.
