Orivy Restaurant – Hoi An, Vietnam
Brilliant! Love it!!
We’ve travelled a bit in Vietnam and this is easily the best Vietnamese meal we’ve had – fresh, tasty and full of flavour but it was also different. Yes, the standard dishes are available but there are also others that are not on every other menu.
We chose the mango salad with dried beef as a starter and loved it – crisp and light with a tangy dressing that wasn’t too sweet for a change. The dried beef was the sweet, Asian type and very more-ish. We shared mains and both were even better than expected. I thought the duck with ginger and onion would be a stir fry, saucy kind of deal but it was more sticky (like a Chinese shredded beef style if that’s your thing) and tasty but again, not too sweet and the duck meat was super tender (but not the msg kind of tender!) The grilled mackerel wrapped in banana leaf was another winner. The fillet of fish was adequately bathed in a paste (like a rich, scrumptious chilli jam) but the flavour of the fish itself was clean and strong enough not to be overpowered by the paste. We also had a serving of the brown rice with peanut and sesame ‘because you have to have rice’ but it was so delicious that I would have that on it’s own. I can’t wait to try more of their dishes. I can only imagine they’re all just as good.
Just to make it even better… drink prices are great, service is friendly, efficient and helpful, and the garden setting is perfect for a relaxing, Hoi An evening.
It’s located off Cua Dai (just east of Pham Hong Thai) – there are signs but nothing else in that alley (unless you’re taking a short cut to the laundry lady like us!).
