Hola Taco – Hoi An, Vietnam

Loving the Vietnamese food in Hoi An but on the weekend we treat ourselves to something different and this week it was Mexican at Hola Taco. It was quiet when we arrived and we had a good choice of tables so we chose the balcony/street side as the inside was stiflingly hot.

Surprising considering it wasn’t an overly hot night and there was a breeze about. The menu has all the standard Mexican offerings plus most of the usual refreshments however, they only have imported wines (glass or bottle). I chose a sauvignon blanc from Chile it wasn’t too bad but I’m slowly getting used to the Dalat white and to be honest, I would have been just as happy with that at (less than) half the price.

We weren’t overly hungry so decided to do a share thing starting with the Pico de Gallo and with such beautiful tomatoes available locally, it was scrumptious and a very generous serving. The accompanying corn chips were delicious – large, thick and crispy. I could have used a few more but that’s always the way! Tacos come in two so we settled on a serve each of the Slow Cooked Pork and Cajun Shrimp. Pork was tasty and full of succulent meat but the fresh, light combination of shrimp and pineapple in the others made that one the standout for me.

Food came out quickly and after that service seemed to stop. We would have ordered more drinks (I did have my eye on a Tamarind Margarita!) and sat for a while but by the time we attracted attention, we were ready to go.

One little hiccup at the end – the young man who took our payment went away and proceeded to attend to other tables but our change didn’t seem to be coming back any time soon. We waited for about 10 minutes before we asked and it then came quickly. It was only 40,000 and I’m sure it was an oversight but it was a little strange.

Assuming the money thing was just a communication issue, the food was terrific and value for money was ok so I would consider going back again.
