Hoang’s place is a relaxed, family run establishment. No frills but clean, cheap and cheerful. The menu is not huge but all the local specialities are there and not only that, they are some of the best I’ve tried in Hoi An, particularly the crispy pork wontons. – each large wonton was topped with a generous serving of delicious rich salsa-like tomato sauce and a prawn. I noticed when we ordered this dish that Hoang looked pleased and I can understand why; it’s obviously one of his specialties. We decided to stick with local dishes so we gave Hoang’s Cau Lau a test run and it also came up at the top of our list – slices of tasty, moist pork and fat noddles on a bed of greens and broth topped off with lots of crunchy crackling. And our final selection, pork rib with rice was another winner – lean pork fillet, lightly spiced and quickly grilled.

All the usual refreshments are available and at very fair prices, and important for us, the beer and wine were cold.

Service is speedy with lots of smiles and although their English is good, they even accommodated our feeble attempts at speaking Vietnamese!

Value for money is exceptional. Our total bill including beer and wine came to 180,000 (that’s currently about A$10).

For great Vietnamese food and happy people in a genuine, non-touristy atmosphere, this is the place to go.
