Located down a long (100 metres), dark and narrow alley, carrying luggage in/out isn’t easy but the neighbours are friendly and it does have loads of local character.  It’s in a terrific spot, close to everything and it can be a little noisy but it is a residential area in a big city so it wasn’t so bad for us. Except for the rooster!

Inside, Chao Hanoi is beautifully decorated in a local/hill tribe style combined with recycled elements (packing crates, pipes, etc).  It’s quite dark but it’s quirky and cute.  The downstairs area consists of a kitchen, dining and bathroom.  This area isn’t air conditioned but there are a few fans so it’s not a big problem.  The kitchen and dining are both well provisioned and it would be easy to shop locally and cook (although we didn’t).  The circular stairs to the upstairs are narrow and would be difficult to take luggage up so we left ours downstairs and used the entry as a dressing room. Once upstairs, there’s another bathroom with a washing machine (very handy!) and a bedroom with two large beds.   The air conditioning works well, there’s lots of shelving and hanging space and a very generous supply of fluffy white towels but the beds were the only problem for us – they are rock hard.  If that’s not a problem for you, I would recommend Chao Hanoi for a pleasant city stay.
